This is the first comprehensive campaign in Boise State history and reflects the critical need for private support in the university’s endeavors for distinction. It is a powerful effort to advance the institution’s commitment to academic and athletic excellence through strategic investment in people, programs and facilities. The campaign specifically seeks to raise funds to enhance undergraduate and graduate academic programs; improve ties to alumni and the state of Idaho; construct stateof-the-art academic, research and athletic facilities; retain and recruit world-class faculty; attract top-tier students; and create innovative interdisciplinary activities.
On July 1, 2004, the campaign began its “quiet phase,” identifying its fundraising priorities, establishing internal operations, securing leadership gifts and identifying prospective donors. The “public phase” was launched Aug. 21, 2007, in conjunction with the new academic year and the institution’s 75th anniversary celebration. Leadership gifts continue to be committed as solicitations expand to as many alumni and friends as possible, inviting them to help reach Destination Distinction.
Boise State University has set a campaign goal of $175 million.
Campaign priorities grew out of the vision and strategic goals of the university becoming a metropolitan research university of distinction. A strategic plan, titled Charting the Course, provides a blueprint for action in the areas of academic excellence, public engagement, a vibrant culture and exceptional research. With that framework, the campaign is the vehicle to make the vision and plan a reality. Funding needs are many and diverse, but these campaign priorities have been identified by the campus community as the most pressing.
Private support is an investment by individuals who recognize the university as an invaluable resource, not only for the Treasure Valley and Idaho but also for the nation. Boise State faces the challenge of maintaining a high-quality faculty and student body in a highly competitive environment. Success in this competition will require a partnership between the public sector and private individuals. Government appropriations per student for higher education have been on the decline while Boise State has been steadily increasing its enrollment over the past 10 years. Only with help can Boise State realize its vision of innovative research and quality teaching, fulfill its State Board of Education mandate and serve the community effectively. Donors have the satisfaction of helping to shape a better future, impact the lives of countless families and grow the potential of the Treasure Valley and region.
Gifts may be designated to specific areas or they can be unrestricted. Some donors give to strengthen the university’s academic and research resources or to support the addition or renewal of infrastructure. By improving academic and student programs, as well as teaching and research facilities, private gifts enhance the university’s ability to recruit high-caliber students and talented faculty.
Normal fundraising seeks ongoing support for students, faculty and facilities. The campaign is a collective effort that allows for a focus on specific goals. The entire campus community is working together to reach these goals.
Your campaign gift will be used for special projects and programs that would otherwise remain unaddressed. Annual gifts count toward the campaign total, so you are urged to make a special pledge to the campaign and to continue or increase your annual giving.
Boise State University willingly accepts anonymous gifts and will protect the anonymity of any donor who requests it as the law allows. Anonymous gifts will be counted in the campaign and are tax-deductible to the extent of the law.
Yes. Many people show their appreciation for a favorite professor or program by supporting a specific department or college. The university can prepare a proposal or gift agreement to suit your interests within legal constraints. To ensure that your contribution is used as you intend, you should discuss it with a development staff member before putting any restriction in writing.
Donors have five years from the date of their pledge to fulfill it. If you have unusual circumstances to consider, you are encouraged to discuss them with a development staff member.
There are many ways to give to Boise State University, including a life-income gift, a gift of retirement fund assets, a gift of life insurance, a gift of appreciated assets and through charitable lead trusts. Other assets that may make gifts and may have significant tax advantages include closely held stock, business practices, partnerships, contracts, leases, royalties and patents. Careful planning can maximize the positive effects of outright contributions such as appreciated securities, life insurance policies, real estate and gifts of personal property.
The campaign offers a variety of possibilities for naming or honoring a relative, friend or other individual. Endowed funds frequently bear the donor’s name, or are named at the donor’s direction for another individual. Buildings and entities such as faculty chairs and academic programs also offer naming opportunities in whole or in part. Naming opportunities are considered as a separate case, in accordance with established university policy, and must be approved by the university president. It is advisable to work with a university development officer on these types of gifts.
